There's no installation, no technician and nothing to book. Your modem arrives ready to go, and the whole job is finding it a good spot and plugging it in.
Before you plug it in, think about where
This is the part worth five minutes, because where the modem sits decides how good your internet is. It's the one thing you control, and moving it a metre can make a real difference.
Your modem needs to hear a mobile tower, so:
Near a window is better than a back room, especially one facing out over open ground rather than into a hill or another building.
Higher beats lower. A shelf beats the floor. Upstairs beats downstairs.
Away from thick walls, anything metal, and the back of the fridge.
There's a second thing pulling the other way: your Wi-Fi spreads out from the modem too. A spot with brilliant signal at the far end of the house isn't much use if the Wi-Fi can't reach the lounge.
Somewhere reasonably central, near an outside wall, up off the floor, is usually the sweet spot.
Setting it up
Put it where you've decided, near a power point.
Plug in the power. That's the only cable you need. There's nothing to connect it to.
Give it a few minutes to wake up and find the network. Don't unplug it while it's thinking.
Check the signal indicator once it's settled. That tells you whether your spot is a good one.
Connect your devices to the Wi-Fi network, using the name and password on the modem.
That's it. The SIM is already inside and already set up for your account, so there's nothing to activate.
If the signal looks weak, move it
Don't settle. People are always surprised how much difference a different windowsill makes.
Try two or three spots, giving it a minute in each to settle before you judge it. It's worth doing properly on day one rather than living with a mediocre connection for a year.
If you can't find anywhere that gets a decent signal, message us before you give up. That's useful information for us and there may be something we can do.
Don't open the modem
The SIM inside is tied to that specific device. Taking it out, or putting it in a phone, won't work and can leave you properly offline rather than just slow.
If you think something's wrong with it, message us rather than opening anything.
Out rural with an aerial
If your signal needs an external aerial, we'll let you know when you place your order. You'll need to organise this with a local provider or purchase one online.
When does my billing start?
When your service goes live, not when the modem is posted. If it's sitting in a courier depot, you're not paying for it.
